Job Description
Tampere University invites applications for the position of Doctoral Researcher in Steel Structures (DSII). This opportunity is part of the Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII), aimed at bridging academic research and industry needs. The selected candidate will work on a four-year dissertation project in collaboration with SSAB, a global leader in sustainable high-strength steel solutions.
The research will focus on hollow section steel structures in construction, aiming to:
Validate the effective material model for cold-formed hollow section structures.
Expand the direct design framework for cross-section classes 3 and 4.
Conduct reliability studies to determine system safety factors for selected hollow section structures.
The project offers a unique chance to engage in cutting-edge research while working closely with industry experts and expanding your professional network.
Key Responsibilities
Execute advanced simulations and parametric studies.
Perform laboratory tests on structural hollow section members.
Collaborate with industry and academic supervisors to achieve project goals.
Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
Engage in approximately 5% teaching responsibilities.
Qualifications
A master’s degree in structural or mechanical engineering (or a related discipline).
Knowledge of Eurocode design rules for steel structures.
Experience with finite element analyses using beam and solid elements.
Familiarity with reliability analysis and laboratory testing.
Preferred Experience
Finite element modeling using software such as ABAQUS.
General knowledge of steel structure design per Eurocode 3.
Previous work experience in structural or material testing.
Skills
Excellent problem-solving abilities.
Strong communication skills in both spoken and written English.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
