Job Description/Overview:
YNAB, a financial education company with a popular money management app, is seeking its first-ever Legal Counsel. This role will focus on both legal and data compliance aspects to help the company navigate evolving regulations and ensure robust protection for both business interests and customer data.
Key Responsibilities:
– Legal Function: Develop, review, and update internal and external legal policies (e.g., Terms of Service, Privacy Policy). Provide legal advice across departments and ensure compliance with regulations.
– Data Compliance: Interpret and apply data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), oversee data protection practices, and serve as the Data Protection Officer if needed.
– Collaboration: Work closely with all departments and executive team members, including providing guidance on legal matters and managing relationships with external counsel.
– Policy and Process Development: Ensure the company’s practices are aligned with its values and legal requirements, and protect intellectual property and business interests.
Qualifications Needed:
– Must live in the United States
– Member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar
– At least three years of experience practicing law
Preferred Experience:
– Previous in-house legal counsel experience
– Experience with SaaS or technology companies
– Knowledge of data privacy laws and regulations
Experience:
– Legal and data compliance experience
– Negotiation and policy development
– Managing external legal relationships
Skills:
– Strong communication and collaboration
– Ability to simplify complex legal issues for non-lawyers
– Proactive and creative problem-solving
