Canada Increases Off-Campus Work Hours for International Students

Canada has officially expanded work opportunities for international students by increasing the off-campus work limit from 20 to 24 hours per week. The new regulation, which took effect on November 8, 2024, gives study permit holders greater flexibility to support themselves financially while pursuing their education.

Under the updated policy, international students enrolled at designated learning institutions (DLIs) can now work off campus for up to 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks such as summer or winter holidays, all without needing a separate work permit.

Off-campus work refers to employment outside the premises of the student’s educational institution. To be eligible, a student must hold a valid study permit that authorizes off-campus employment and be enrolled full-time in an eligible post-secondary program. Those whose study permits specifically prohibit off-campus work, or who are enrolled solely in English or French as a second language (ESL/FSL) programs, are not eligible for this benefit.

In contrast, on-campus work includes jobs performed within the facilities of the university or college where the student is registered. Full-time study permit holders may engage in on-campus work throughout their studies without a separate work permit.

Additionally, students holding an open work permit may work for any employer in Canada, though their employment may still be subject to specific restrictions regarding occupation or location.

While the new policy allows more working hours during the semester, international students are reminded that they cannot exceed 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions. However, they may still work full-time during scheduled academic breaks.

The increase in allowable work hours reflects Canada’s commitment to helping international students manage rising living costs and gain valuable Canadian work experience while maintaining their academic focus.
