Step 1: Choose a UK Institution and Get an Offer
The first step in applying for a UK study visa is securing admission to a UK educational institution. Nigerians must apply to an approved UK university, college, or school that is licensed to sponsor international students. This is called a Student Route Sponsor.
-
Apply to your chosen institution online through their website or UCAS (for undergraduate courses).
-
Submit all required documents such as your WAEC/NECO results, international passport, personal statement, references, and academic transcripts.
-
Once accepted, the school will send you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). This is a unique reference number that proves you’ve been offered a place.

Step 2: Understand the Visa Type You Need
Nigerians who plan to study in the UK for more than 6 months should apply for the Student Visa under the Student Route (formerly Tier 4). This visa allows you to live, study, and even work part-time during your course.
If your course lasts less than 6 months and you do not plan to work or extend your stay, the Standard Visitor Visa may be enough — but it’s not suitable for long-term studies or those who want to switch to work visas later.
Step 3: Prepare the Required Documents
You need to prepare the following documents before starting your visa application:
-
Valid International Passport (with at least 6 months validity)
-
CAS Statement/Number from your UK school
-
Proof of Funds:
-
You must show you have enough money to pay for your tuition and living expenses.
-
Tuition + £1,334 per month for 9 months if studying in London (£12,006 total), or £1,023 per month for 9 months if outside London (£9,207 total).
-
This money should be in your account or your parent’s account for at least 28 days before you apply.
-
-
Bank Statements or financial sponsor letter
-
Proof of Parental Relationship (if using your parent’s bank statement)
-
TB Test Certificate (from an approved clinic in Nigeria)
-
Academic Certificates and transcripts
-
English Language Proficiency (e.g., IELTS UKVI if required by the school)
-
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) Payment Receipt

Step 4: Apply Online for Your Visa
Go to the official UK government visa website: https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/apply
-
Fill out the online form
-
Pay the visa application fee (£490 as of 2025)
-
Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) – this is usually £776 per year of stay for students
-
Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre in Nigeria (e.g., Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt)
Step 5: Attend Your Biometric Appointment
On your appointment day at the Visa Application Centre:
-
Bring your printed visa application form and all required documents
-
Submit your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph)
-
Submit your passport for visa stamping
Sometimes, you may be asked to attend an interview. Be prepared to explain:
-
Why you chose your course
-
Why you picked that university
-
How you plan to fund your education
-
What your future plans are after the course

Step 6: Wait for a Decision
Standard processing time for UK student visa applications from Nigeria is around 3 weeks. You can opt for Priority or Super Priority services at an extra cost to get a faster decision (within 1 to 5 days).
You’ll receive an email or SMS notification once your visa is ready for collection. If successful, your visa vignette will be stamped in your passport and you’ll receive a decision letter with instructions on how to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) when you arrive in the UK.
Step 7: Travel to the UK
Once you get your visa, you can travel to the UK up to one month before your course starts (if your course lasts more than 6 months). Make sure you carry:
-
Your passport with the visa
-
Your CAS letter
-
Proof of funds and academic documents (UK Border may ask for them)
-
TB test certificate and BRP collection letter
