Position Overview
We are seeking an Indiana Rural Associate to support solar energy adoption and advocacy in rural Indiana communities. This role will focus on either rural organizing or engaging Rural Electric Member Cooperative (REMC) member-owners. The Associate will work closely with the Indiana Team and regional support team to execute SUN’s goals and initiatives in the state.
This is a remote position based in Indiana.
This role is funded for a one-year term, with the potential for extension based on grant funding.
Key Responsibilities
- Community Engagement & Education: Organize and engage Hoosiers across urban, suburban, and rural communities through solar education programs and public events.
- Grassroots Organizing: Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, REMC member-owners, and local organizations to expand solar advocacy efforts.
- Policy & Research: Conduct policy, regulatory, and market research to support SUN’s state program goals.
- Legislative & Local Advocacy: Engage with legislators, local governments, and partner organizations to advance pro-solar policies in Indiana.
- Technical Assistance: Provide guidance and resources for individuals and entities interested in adopting solar energy.
- Communications & Outreach: Create and distribute content on solar energy topics, ensuring that SUN members are informed and empowered advocates.
- Coalition Building: Represent the Indiana Program in coalitions and at in-person and virtual events.
- Volunteer Leadership Development: Facilitate public education and volunteer engagement through outreach, public speaking, and training sessions.
Required Qualifications
- Resident of Indiana
- Two or more years of experience (professional or volunteer) in grassroots organizing, event planning, project management, online engagement, and/or communications
- Ability to engage with diverse groups of people
- Strong computer skills, including online facilitation and comfort with social media
- Ability to work remotely in a fast-paced, action-oriented environment
- Willingness to travel approximately 25 percent within Indiana, including overnight stays, and biannual staff retreats in the U.S.
- Ability to manage multiple projects from development through completion
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong collaboration, networking, and relationship-building skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities
- Knowledge of social, energy, and/or environmental issues affecting Indiana
- Public speaking experience
- Experience working with and engaging rural communities
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly Rate: $26.92 ($27/hour)
- Full-Time, Remote Position
- Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance (85 percent coverage for employees and dependents)
- Fifteen vacation days plus 244 prorated wellness hours per year
- Paid holidays, including all federal holidays, the day after Thanksgiving, the week between Christmas and New Year’s, plus two additional personal days
