Australia’s Northern Territory DAMA III Visa 2025: Everything You Need to Know

Australia’s Northern Territory Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA III) has officially opened, and it presents a golden opportunity for international workers eager to live and work in one of the most unique parts of Australia. Launched on March 19, 2025, the new DAMA III is bigger, longer, and more flexible than its predecessor. If you’ve ever considered working in Australia under employer sponsorship, this may be your chance.

What is the DAMA III?

The Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) is a special labor agreement between the Australian Government and the Northern Territory Government. It allows approved employers in the Northern Territory (NT) to sponsor skilled and semi-skilled overseas workers for jobs that cannot be filled locally.

Unlike other skilled migration pathways, DAMA offers concessions to age, English language, and salary requirements, making it more accessible for international workers who might otherwise be ineligible under mainstream visa programs.

What’s New in DAMA III?

The new NT DAMA III comes with major upgrades:

  • Expanded Occupations: 325 occupations are now available (up from 135), covering both skilled and semi-skilled roles across industries such as hospitality, health care, construction, agriculture, and more.

  • Higher Annual Quota: 1,500 worker nominations per year (previously 625).

  • Long-Term Stability: The agreement runs until June 30, 2030, giving employers and workers certainty.

  • Employer Flexibility: Employers can apply for bulk endorsement ceilings of up to 5 years, making workforce planning easier.

  • Visa Pathways: Available through the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482), Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Subclass 494), and with pathways to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme in some cases.

Key Concessions Under DAMA III

One of the reasons DAMA is so attractive is its relaxed requirements compared to other visa streams:

  • Age Limit: Up to 55 years (50 for lower-skilled roles).

  • English Language: Concessions apply to certain occupations, making it easier for non-native speakers.

  • Salary: Employers can offer 15% below the standard minimum salary threshold (CSIT). Non-cash benefits such as housing (up to 10% of salary) can also be included.

  • Pathway to Permanent Residency: Many roles allow transition to permanent residency after working under the DAMA pathway.

Who Can Apply?

Unlike other visas, you cannot apply for the DAMA visa independently. You must first secure a job offer from an employer in the Northern Territory who is endorsed to participate in the DAMA program.

Eligible industries include:

  • Health care & aged care

  • Tourism & hospitality

  • Construction & trades

  • Agriculture & farming

  • Transport & logistics

  • Education and community services

Step-by-Step Application Process

Here’s how the application works:

Step 1: Find an Endorsed Employer
  • Search for jobs in the Northern Territory with companies willing to sponsor under DAMA.

  • Employers must first apply to the NT Government (MigrationNT) to get DAMA endorsement.

Step 2: Employer Endorsement
  • The employer applies for endorsement to sponsor workers under DAMA III.

  • Labour Market Testing (LMT) must be done to prove no local worker is available.

Step 3: Nomination Application
  • Once endorsed, the employer submits a nomination to the Department of Home Affairs under DAMA III.

  • This links your job to your visa.

Step 4: Visa Application
  • After nomination approval, you apply for the relevant visa (Subclass 482, 494, or 186).

  • You must provide personal documents such as passport, qualifications, work experience, English test (if required), and health & character checks.

Step 5: Work and Transition to PR
  • Once granted, you can live and work in the NT for your sponsoring employer.

  • Some roles allow transition to permanent residency after meeting work requirements.

Important Updates for 2025
  • From July 1, 2025, the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) will rise from $73,150 to $76,515. Salaries under DAMA will need to reflect this increase.

  • DAMA III runs until 2030, providing a long-term migration pathway for both employers and workers.

Why Choose DAMA III?

The Northern Territory offers not just career opportunities but also a unique lifestyle. Living in Darwin or regional towns gives you access to Australia’s rich culture, vast landscapes, and a community that genuinely needs skilled workers. DAMA III is not just a visa, it’s a pathway to permanent settlement in Australia for those who seize the chance.

The Northern Territory’s DAMA III is officially open, with more jobs, higher quotas, flexible concessions, and real pathways to permanent residency. If you are an international worker dreaming of Australia, now is the perfect time to explore opportunities in the Northern Territory.
